Are hotels in Mexico really safe?
Following alarming reports from Europe and the United States, where thousands of people have fallen ill, the Mexican Ministry of Health rushed to conduct comprehensive tests. Local authorities performed strict PCR tests on samples of fruits, vegetables, and water at more than a dozen popular hotels in the Caribbean Riviera Maya area. To the surprise of many, all tests conducted at the hotels returned negative, and official Mexico denies that the source of the parasite is found in its resorts. Despite this, medical experts warn that the symptoms of the disease can be severe and not pleasant at all.
Although the disease is not directly life-threatening, it causes severe symptoms such as intense watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, and flu-like symptoms. Doctors describe the situation as one where patients can barely make it to the bathroom in time. The great concern is that the infection also occurs at luxury "all-inclusive" resorts, where tourists tend to feel completely safe and do not always adhere to basic food and water hygiene precautions during their stay.
How can you protect yourself on vacation?
To reduce the risk of infection, health experts recommend that travelers in Mexico stick to drinking water from sealed bottles only and eat well-cooked food. It is also recommended to avoid eating fresh berries that have not been cooked, herbs, unpeeled fruits, and salads. If you have returned from a vacation and started suffering from diarrhea, bloating, or fatigue, seek medical attention immediately and inform the doctor about the destination you visited.
