Australia's conservative opposition has unveiled an unprecedented plan to slash 650,000 temporary migration visas over the next four years, aiming to curb soaring living costs and severe housing shortages.

Radical Migration Cuts

Speaking at a press conference, Opposition Leader Angus Taylor declared that the nation's migration system had become deeply flawed under the current government. The proposed policy would reduce net overseas migration to 100,000 annually for a two-year period, representing roughly one-third of its current volume.

What we are proposing today is the biggest cut in immigration in the nation's history. This will put Australia first and our national interest first, said Angus Taylor.

Political Pressure and Housing Crisis

The drastic policy shift arrives as anti-immigration sentiment surges across the country, fueled by an acute housing crisis and overburdened infrastructure. The conservative blueprint also trims humanitarian visas while prioritizing skilled foreign workers.

The opposition's aggressive stance positions it between the ruling center-left Labor government's more modest targets and the extreme reductions demanded by the far-right One Nation party, which has gained momentum in recent polls.
