Antisemitic attack in Florida: Chabad synagogue vandalized, suspect arrested
Security cameras recorded the suspect throwing a brick at the front of the synagogue in downtown Sarasota. An indictment was filed against him for damaging a religious building, which was classified as a hate crime.
Antisemitism persists globally: police in Sarasota, Florida, have arrested 30-year-old Brayton Laschinger on suspicion of vandalizing a Chabad synagogue in the city center with antisemitic intent. He has been charged with a felony for causing damage to a religious building, classified as a hate crime.
According to the police statement, the incident occurred in the early hours of July 29. Security cameras captured the suspect, who had covered his head and face with a blue towel, throwing a brick at the facade of the synagogue on Coconut Avenue and shattering the front window.
During interrogation, Laschinger admitted that he had encountered social media content that morning that "angered him," and stated that he chose to target the building because it is a Jewish house of worship. Following this admission, authorities classified the act as a hate crime.
The police stated that the investigation is ongoing and have called on anyone with additional information regarding the case to contact the Sarasota Police Department's investigative unit.
