Arthur Hayes Predicts Ethereum Could Reach $200,000 Amid AI Market Risks
BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes predicts Ethereum could hit $100,000 to $200,000 amid potential AI market shocks, while recent chip stock drops spark massive crypto liquidations.

Arthur Hayes, co-founder of the BitMEX crypto exchange and chief investment officer at Maelstrom, has reiterated an extraordinary prediction that Ethereum could reach between $100,000 and $200,000 at the peak of the next market cycle. In a podcast interview, Hayes explained that he anticipates a scenario where massive investments in artificial intelligence fail to meet expectations, triggering a credit crisis and shaking financial markets. According to him, the policy response to such a crisis could ultimately create ideal conditions for a major surge in cryptocurrencies.
The Mechanics of the Hayes Scenario
Under Hayes's scenario, the initial phase would actually be negative for crypto: if companies struggle to repay loans taken out to finance AI infrastructure, investors might flee risky assets, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Subsequently, governments and central banks could respond by cutting interest rates, injecting liquidity, or taking other measures to support the economy. Hayes estimates that newly injected capital entering the financial system could boost demand for digital assets. He also reiterated his long-term prediction that Bitcoin could reach $1,000,000, though this remains an aggressive personal forecast rather than a market consensus.
Market Turmoil and Crypto Liquidations
Meanwhile, the broader market illustrates how quickly pressure can spread across sectors. South Korea's Kospi index plummeted by roughly 5.5%, with shares of Samsung and SK Hynix tumbling amid concerns over high valuations in artificial intelligence companies and growing competition from Chinese chipmakers. Bitcoin briefly dropped below $81,000, and within 24 hours, leveraged positions in the crypto market amounting to approximately $803 million were liquidated. According to blockchain data, about $178 million of those liquidations occurred in Ethereum positions.
One of the more unusual highlights of the sell-off was the scale of losses in bets on chip stocks via crypto exchanges. Perpetual futures contracts on SanDisk shares recorded liquidations totaling around $19.09 million, surpassing the liquidations on XRP positions, which stood at approximately $18.78 million. Such contracts allow traders to speculate on equity prices around the clock using leverage without purchasing the underlying stock.
The Scale of the Ethereum Target
The gap between the current price and Hayes's target highlights the magnitude of the bet: Ethereum trades around $2,505. To reach $100,000, its price would need to multiply by roughly 40; a target of $200,000 reflects an increase of nearly 80-fold. At that price, based on a circulating supply of roughly 120 million coins, Ethereum's market capitalization would approach $24 trillion, an enormous scale compared to today's financial markets. However, the collapse in chip stocks and crypto liquidations does not prove that Hayes's foreseen crisis has officially begun, though it may well be an early chapter in a larger historical shift.
