Anthropic has announced Claude Duet, a new personal AI agent designed to perform tasks autonomously, even when users are away from their computers or phones. Unlike standard chatbots that wait for direct prompts, Duet is built to initiate actions independently, identify pending tasks, monitor new information, and operate in the background. The product is powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model and is aimed primarily at professionals and small businesses.

Autonomous Execution and Cloud Infrastructure

A key distinction between Duet and conventional AI interactions is its ability to continue executing tasks while the user is disconnected. Each agent is allocated a dedicated cloud-based virtual machine equipped with its own browser. Users can assign tasks via short text or voice messages through a dedicated application. According to Anthropic, Duet can leverage over 6,000 integrations available in the Claude marketplace, connecting to services like Gmail and Slack to process messages, draft replies, and manage e-commerce storefronts on Shopify.

Duet is also capable of making purchases on behalf of the user through payment services like Stripe's Link and Shopify Pay, though strictly upon receiving explicit authorization. Furthermore, upcoming updates will allow the agent to log into websites using credentials managed by 1Password. Anthropic emphasizes that while Duet can read data, draft documents, and perform preliminary work without prior consent, it will always pause and wait for user approval before sending messages, executing payments, signing documents, or deleting information.

Security Protocols and Market Competition

The launch of Duet places Anthropic directly into the escalating race for autonomous AI assistants, competing against OpenAI's Dots and Meta Platforms' Muse. While Meta's Muse has targeted the broader consumer market—reaching over 10 million users in the United States and Canada within a month and a half—Anthropic has focused Duet on professional workflows. Despite its advanced capabilities, Anthropic acknowledges that Duet remains in an early stage, noting potential risks such as misinterpreting correspondence or misjudging task urgency. At this initial phase, Duet is available exclusively to paid subscribers in the U.S. via a waitlist.
