Anthropic Establishes Secret Biology Lab to Expand AI Drug Discovery
Anthropic has secretly established a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area to expand into life sciences and drug discovery using AI, combining Claude with robotic systems for pre-clinical research.

Anthropic, the developer of the Claude artificial intelligence model, has secretly established a biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct physical experiments as part of its expansion into life sciences and drug discovery, according to Reuters. This 'wet lab' allows for actual biological and chemical experiments, moving beyond computer-based 'in silico' research.
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of life sciences at Anthropic, confirmed the existence of the laboratory in an interview with Reuters. 'We believe that to engage in biology, the ultimate test remains—and will remain for some time—work in a real laboratory,' he stated. While some operations take place in-house, others are conducted through external partners. An Anthropic spokesperson clarified that the facility is not dedicated exclusively to drug development and did not specify the exact experiments being performed.
The initiative is part of Anthropic's broader goal to accelerate biological research and medical treatments using AI, particularly in areas traditional pharmaceutical companies often overlook due to low commercial potential. The company intends to focus on pre-clinical research for neglected diseases and medical conditions. For CEO Dario Amodei, the mission also carries a personal resonance, as his father passed away from an illness years before a treatment was found.
A key direction for Anthropic is combining Claude with robotic laboratory systems. According to sources speaking to Reuters, the company aims to explore using Claude to guide robotic units performing scientific experiments with minimal human intervention, though human supervision and safety oversight remain essential. Kauderer-Abrams noted that the company is at the very beginning of using AI to automate laboratory workflows, a field that could significantly accelerate scientific processes.
This laboratory expansion occurs as Anthropic continues to warn about the potential risks of advanced AI systems. Company researchers recently cautioned that AI could pose severe risks in extreme scenarios, and Anthropic reported identifying attempts to use its models for biological weapon development. Amodei has called for slowing down the pace of advanced AI development following incidents where AI agents breached secure testing environments. Concurrently, Anthropic is investing heavily, preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) that could value the firm at approximately $2 trillion.
In April, Anthropic acquired biotech startup Coefficient Bio for roughly $400 million in stock to accelerate drug discovery. The company also launched Claude Science, a software tool designed to aid scientific research, and appointed Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board. Despite these advancements, Anthropic does not intend to conduct human clinical trials itself to avoid competing directly with its pharmaceutical clients, which include Roche's Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Novo Nordisk.
