Former Footballer Andy Carroll Confirms Identity of His Sexual Attacker
Former footballer Andy Carroll has confirmed that former BBC coach Colin Adams is the man convicted of sexually assaulting him in 2019, following public court documents.

Former professional footballer Andy Carroll has publicly confirmed that Colin Adams, the former dance and fitness coach for the BBC show "Fame Academy," is the man who sexually assaulted him. The revelation came to light following a report in the British newspaper The Sun.
Conviction and Court Proceedings
Adams, now 59, was convicted in September 2023 at the Chelmsford Crown Court for the sexual assault of the former football star. In November of that same year, he was sentenced to 20 months in prison. Additionally, Adams was placed on the sex offenders register for ten years and subjected to a restraining order barring him from entering the village where Carroll resides.
Carroll detailed the assault in his new autobiography, "Owning It," but initially chose to withhold the attacker's identity. However, after learning that Adams' name appeared in publicly accessible court documents, he decided to confirm his identity.
"Now that Colin Adams has been named in court documents as the person who attacked me, I can confirm that it is him," Carroll told The Sun. "I hope that now I can finally start to put this chapter behind me."
The Incident and Impact on Career
The assault took place in 2019 at Carroll's home during his time playing for Newcastle. According to his account in the book, Adams had visited his home to watch a boxing match and subsequently stayed overnight. Carroll woke up during the night to find Adams sexually assaulting him. Carroll recalled striking Adams, removing him from the house, and immediately calling the police. During the trial, Judge Mary Loram strongly rejected Adams' defense, stating that his version of events was entirely implausible.
Carroll noted that the legal proceedings were humiliating and harrowing, impacting every aspect of his personal and professional life, including his football career. By speaking out, the former player hopes to encourage others and finally move past the trauma.
