LiDAR Technology Accidentally Reveals Massive Ancient Mayan City in Mexico
Archaeologists using LiDAR technology have accidentally discovered Valeriana, a massive ancient Mayan city in Mexico. The site contains over 6,700 structures, including pyramids and plazas, dating back to before 150 CE.

An ancient Mayan megacity has been accidentally discovered in the Mexican state of Campeche, after remaining hidden for centuries beneath dense forest canopy. The site, named "Valeriana," is located immediately adjacent to an active highway and surrounding agricultural fields that local farmers have cultivated for decades. Despite its proximity to modern civilization, neither the scientific community nor state authorities knew of its existence. The discovery was made possible through the reanalysis of data originally collected for environmental monitoring purposes.
Laser Scanning Technology
The research breakthrough was based on LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology—a system mounted on an aircraft that fires laser beams toward the ground, successfully penetrating the forest canopy to generate a highly detailed three-dimensional map of the terrain.
The data was originally gathered in 2013 as part of a project to monitor forest conditions and deforestation. When scientists reprocessed the same dataset using archaeological tools, clear remnants of massive human construction suddenly emerged.
Architecture of the Lost Metropolis
Beneath the forest, a vast urban center was revealed, featuring two main hubs of monumental structures located about two kilometers apart and connected by a dense residential area. The central complex includes enclosed public plazas linked by wide streets, temple pyramids, a traditional ball court, and a water reservoir created by damming a stream bed.
Additionally, researchers identified a specialized building complex known as an "E-Group," which typically indicates a city founded before 150 CE. The combination of these features suggests that Valeriana likely functioned as a political capital during the Classic Maya golden age. Researchers suspect that the settlement extends well beyond the boundaries of the scanned area.
The discovered housing density is considered extraordinary. Across all surveyed areas, 6,764 structures were identified—an average of about 55 structures per square kilometer. However, in the urban core of Valeriana, the density reached approximately 426 structures per square kilometer. This is higher than any other known Maya site compared in the study, with the sole exception of the famous city of Calakmul.
Historical Context and Parallels
Nevertheless, researchers emphasize the need for caution before drawing definitive conclusions. The aerial mapping has not yet been verified by ground excavations; on laser maps, natural rock piles can sometimes resemble house ruins, meaning the structure count remains preliminary. Furthermore, the technology cannot determine whether all buildings were occupied simultaneously, making it impossible to estimate the exact population.
The estimation that Valeriana was founded before 150 CE places it at a historical juncture parallel to one of the most turbulent and decisive eras in Jewish history. During the first and second centuries CE, the Second Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, followed decades later by the bloody Bar Kokhba revolt.
Following the loss of the Temple and the exile of residents, Jewish life in the Land of Israel underwent a fundamental transformation: shifting from a sacrificial cult centered on the Temple to a world of study halls, synagogues, and Torah study led by the sages of the Mishnah. This process culminated toward the end of the second century with the compilation of the Mishnah by Rabbi Judah ha-Nasi. Thus, while the Maya in the forests of Central America built giant cities around pagan temples, rabbinic Judaism was being shaped in the Land of Israel, redefining Jewish life for generations.
