Amazon is actively reaching out to former employees, including those previously laid off, to fill open positions across the company, particularly within its cloud computing and artificial intelligence divisions. According to emails reviewed by Business Insider and confirmed by a company spokesperson, recruiters are targeting alumni with relevant AI and machine learning experience.

In one message sent last month, Amazon's AI agent division, led by AWS Vice President Swami Sivasubramanian, invited former workers to discuss new roles under a recruitment effort referred to as "Swami's Boomerang Reengagement Initiative." Another recruiter in the AWS finance division offered a streamlined interview process and explicitly asked if Amazon's return-to-office policy had influenced the worker's initial departure.

Recruitment Strategy and RTO Challenges

"A lot has changed since you were here, and there is now very much compelling work happening in AI and machine learning," one recruitment email stated.

Amazon spokesperson Hayley Silva stated that rehiring former employees is a long-standing practice rather than a newly established initiative dedicated solely to AI or cloud computing. Silva confirmed that individuals who were previously laid off are eligible for consideration, but emphasized that the outreach stems from open job requisitions rather than an effort to court workers who left over remote work policies.

Layoffs and Workplace Policies

Over the past year, Amazon has cut more than 30,000 jobs across multiple rounds of layoffs, marking the largest workforce reduction in the company's history. Earlier this year, the company eliminated roles within its artificial intelligence general unit to concentrate resources on core initiatives, alongside a broader workforce reduction affecting roughly 16,000 employees.

Despite the push to rehire talent, Amazon's strict return-to-office mandates continue to complicate recruitment efforts in the competitive AI sector. The requirement for employees to work from the office five days a week and geographical location restrictions have prompted some candidates to accept lower-paying roles at competing firms in exchange for greater remote work flexibility.
