IDF General Details Technological Challenges of Gaza Hostage Rescues
Major General Nitzan Alon revealed the technological and moral dilemmas behind the IDF hostage rescue efforts during the 2026 IT Conference in Tel Aviv.
Technology and Human Dilemmas in the Hostage Rescue Effort
Major General (Res.) Nitzan Alon, head of the Hostages and Missing Persons Headquarters, revealed the dramatic human and technological dilemmas behind the effort to rescue hostages from Gaza.
Speaking at the 2026 Israel Information Technology Conference at Expo Tel Aviv, Alon detailed how an entire intelligence organization was built from scratch during wartime, combining massive amounts of technological data with difficult daily decisions.
Building an Unprecedented Technological Array
Alon recalled the difficult starting point following the October 7 failure, when the headquarters faced 3,146 unaccounted-for individuals. An unprecedented technological array was established, collecting data from terrorist cameras, security cameras, aircraft, tanks, and civilian phones, even developing solutions to detect signals from 30 meters underground.
We made decisions every day, and sometimes we made mistakes. We carry the pain of those mistakes with us, Alon shared.
Despite the pain, Alon noted that systems and fighters successfully saved hostages and returned them alive to Israel in dozens of cases, praising the reserve personnel from the high-tech sector who mobilized with exceptional dedication.
