Alexander Zverev has achieved a historic milestone by securing the year-end world number one ranking for the first time in his career, becoming the first German player to do so. The 29-year-old tennis star, who captured his first two Grand Slam titles this season at Roland Garros and the US Open, clinched the top spot following the injury update from Jannik Sinner, who announced last week that he would not return to the courts in 2026.

A Dream Come True

"This has been a fantastic season for me, with titles in Paris and New York, and knowing that I will finish the year as the world number one is simply a dream come true," Zverev said. "I put in so much work and effort to reach this goal, especially after returning from my ankle injury. I look forward to finishing the season in the best possible way."

Sinner, who previously held the top ranking with 11,000 points compared to Zverev's 9,720, has been sidelined since winning Wimbledon in July due to a knee injury. The Italian player announced he needs further treatment and will not compete again this year, meaning he cannot defend his points from late 2025. This development mathematically guaranteed Zverev the year-end summit.

Historic Grand Slam Run

Zverev began 2026 without a Grand Slam title but quickly added two to his resume. After reaching the Australian Open semifinals, where he fell to Carlos Alcaraz in an epic five-hour and 27-minute battle, he advanced to at least the semifinals of the first four Masters tournaments. At Roland Garros, he overcame Flavio Cobolli in a grueling five-set final to claim his maiden major title, becoming the first German man to win the tournament in the Open Era. He later added his second major at the US Open, concluding the Grand Slam season with an impressive 25-2 record.

Alongside his historic achievement, Zverev also became the oldest player to secure their first year-end number one ranking, edging past legends like Andre Agassi and Andy Murray. Zverev is currently competing in the Shanghai Masters round of 16 as he looks to add further silverware to his remarkable season.
