At just 29 years old, Alexander Wang, a college dropout from MIT and former CEO of Scale AI, has become Meta's head of artificial intelligence. Handpicked by Mark Zuckerberg, Wang has played a pivotal role in steering Meta back into the center of the fierce AI race, culminating in the successful launch of the Muse AI assistant.

Meta shares have surged by nearly 20% since the early September launch of Muse, an app that has dominated the top spot on the Apple App Store for two consecutive weeks. Wang brings a fresh, Gen Z-driven communication style to Meta's executive ranks, contrasting sharply with traditional corporate norms. Known for his casual attire, social media presence, and provocative online demeanor, Wang has cultivated a distinct persona that resonates with younger demographics.

The Path from Scale AI to Meta

Growing up in New Mexico as the son of nuclear physicists from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Wang displayed an early aptitude for complex sciences. He dropped out of high school to work at Quora before enrolling at MIT in 2015. Shortly after, he left higher education to co-found Scale AI, a data-labeling startup that eventually secured massive valuations and turned Wang into one of the world's youngest self-made billionaires.

In June 2025, Meta invested $14 billion to acquire a 49% stake in Scale AI and onboarded Wang to overhaul its AI operations. Facing intense pressure following the underperformance of the Llama 4 model, Wang spearheaded the creation of the elite TBD Lab, recruiting top-tier researchers under strict confidentiality and lucrative compensation packages.

Navigating the Competitive AI Landscape

Despite internal friction regarding executive compensation and the secretive nature of the TBD Lab, Wang's unorthodox marketing strategies have driven Muse to unprecedented heights. Utilizing aggressive social media campaigns and viral memes, Wang continues to push boundaries as Meta competes directly with industry heavyweights like OpenAI and Google.

"When you spend billions of dollars to bring in someone from outside Meta for a very senior role, it is obviously going to cause resentment," said Mike Wolfle, a partner at Hennessy Capital and Scale board member. "That said, Mark and Alexander deserve a lot of credit for actually making it work."

As the tech giant pours hundreds of billions of dollars into data centers and advanced infrastructure, Wang remains at the forefront of defining Meta's technological future, balancing aggressive market competition with the demands of scaling next-generation artificial intelligence.
