A faulty intelligence report generated by artificial intelligence nearly triggered a military conflict between the United States and China during the conflict with Iran, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the incident.

The Near-Miss Incident

According to the report, a U.S. military intelligence document claimed that a Chinese vessel was carrying components intended for Iran's nuclear weapons program. In response to the information, U.S. forces began preparing for a raid on the ship and prepared for the possibility that the operation would escalate into a violent confrontation.

However, before the forces acted against the vessel, it became clear that the information underlying the preparation was incorrect. The report was generated using an artificial intelligence system, and the cargo found on board the ship was of a different type and did not include the components attributed to it.

The report was completely false and almost started a war, one of the sources told CNN, emphasizing the severity of the incident.

Risks of AI in Military Intelligence

An American action against a Chinese vessel could have ignited a severe crisis with Beijing, especially if the crew or Chinese forces had resisted the takeover attempt. Such a scenario could have quickly led to a clash between the two superpowers, running parallel to the war the U.S. was already waging against Iran.

The incident highlights the dangers inherent in using artificial intelligence in operational intelligence-gathering processes. While such systems can rapidly process large amounts of data, they can also present false or unfounded information as reliable conclusions, leading to actual military preparations.

According to CNN, the event raises questions regarding the control mechanisms operated by the U.S. military, how the information was verified, and the extent of human oversight over AI-generated outputs.
