The Israeli journalism community is mourning the passing of Aharon Weiss, a legendary editor at Yedioth Ahronoth who shaped some of the nation's most iconic newspaper sections. Ron Yaron, current editor of Ulpan Shishi and former editor of Yedioth Ahronoth, shared a heartfelt tribute, noting that anyone who ever worked at the newspaper knew Weiss.
The Mastermind Behind the Back Page
According to Yaron, Weiss was the creative force behind popular features such as "Across the Country" and "Around the World". He also edited the back page, which many readers famously turned to first when picking up the daily paper.
"Weiss was responsible for the interesting part of the formula, possessing the best intuition to choose stories that the whole country would talk about the next day," Yaron wrote.
Despite the intense pressure of the news desk, Weiss remained a calm and steady presence. Ironically, the pages he edited were full of bold colors, sensationalism, and elegance—proving that a mix of tabloid flair and good taste was entirely possible under his guidance.
