The heatwave is already well felt across the country, and the air conditioner has become almost overnight the most important appliance in the house. However, even when it runs for long hours, it is not always possible to get rid of the feeling of heat, fatigue, and humidity that accompany us throughout the day.

Before lowering the air conditioner to 16 degrees or staying glued to the freezer, it is worth knowing a few simple habits that can make a significant difference. They do not require expensive purchases—just a little attention and the right timing.

1. Close the blinds early

Sunlight entering through the windows gradually heats up the room and can turn it into a greenhouse. A common mistake is to wait until the house is already scorching to close the blinds. In rooms exposed to the sun, it is recommended to close the blinds or curtains as early as the morning hours.

2. Ventilate at the right time

Opening windows in the middle of a hot day does not always help. When the temperature outside is higher than inside, the incoming air may actually heat up the room. It is best to ventilate in the early morning or at night when the air is cooler.

3. Stop setting the AC to 16 degrees

Lowering the air conditioner to extreme temperatures will not necessarily cool the room faster. In most cases, it only causes the unit to work longer and consume more electricity. Energy efficiency guides recommend a moderate 25 degrees; every degree lower increases electricity consumption by about 5%.

4. Clean the filters

If the air conditioner is running non-stop but the room remains hot, the problem may be the filters. Dust and dirt impair airflow and reduce cooling efficiency. Regular cleaning is a simple action that improves airflow and reduces the load on the unit.

5. Shift cooking to the evening

Ovens, stoves, and dishwashers emit a lot of heat. On particularly hot days, operate these appliances in the evening and prefer light meals during the day that do not require prolonged cooking.

6. Keep water in sight

It is easy to forget to drink if the bottle is in another room. Place it on your desk or next to the sofa. Drink throughout the day, don't wait for thirst, and limit sugary drinks and alcohol.

7. Change bedding and clothing

Thick bedding and heavy fabrics trap heat. On hot days, prefer light bedding and loose, comfortable clothing. If you go out, choose light-colored clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

8. Cool only the room you are in

When all doors are open, the air conditioner tries to cool a larger area than necessary. Close the doors of empty rooms to concentrate cooling in the active area. Ensure no one is left in a closed, hot room—especially children or pets.

9. Turn off unused appliances

Computers, screens, and strong lighting emit heat even if we barely feel it. Turning off unnecessary appliances won't make the house cool instantly, but it reduces the internal heat load and saves electricity.

10. Adapt your daily routine

Instead of fighting the heat during the hardest hours, adapt your routine. Move physical activity and errands to the early morning or evening. If you must go out at noon, stay in shaded or air-conditioned places.

Do not ignore warning signs

Headaches, dizziness, extreme weakness, confusion, or loss of consciousness may indicate heat injury and require urgent medical help. In case of suspected heat stroke, do not let the victim drink and call for medical help immediately.

There is no way to eliminate the heatwave, but shading the house, using the air conditioner correctly, and changing your activity hours can make the scorching days much more bearable.
